The Pyramid is yet another addition to the "dangerous exploration" genre. I found it mildly entertaining, yet not at all special or particularly interesting.

The story is the usual: explorers on a mission. Their organization, and the local residents are telling them to go home because "it's too dangerous," but they go on anyway. Scary stuff starts to happen, and they proceed onward until... well, you know.

The main actress comes from the Megan Fox school of open-mouth-pouty-face acting. She is supposed to be a successful anthropologist, but she comes off as a ditz. I'm not saying this because she is blonde and attractive... it was the way she delivered her lines.

The CGI was pretty awful. I won't spoil, but at one point toward the end it appeared that someone was wearing a prosthetic mask with really prominent eye holes. Some other things looked quite fake as well.

It was ... okay.

We recently saw this film at the Napa Film Festival and thought it was not only the best movie in the festival but also one of the best movies we saw in 2014. If you have not seen it yet, put it on your "must see" list.

The story is a wonderful love story, complete with the strings tugging at your heart and the joy of seeing two people fall in love in current times. At first, Amira and Sam do not seem likely to form any sort of relationship but soon their true selves emerge, they learn how to communicate and respect each other, like and then love each other.

Writing a screenplay about a balanced, heartwarming and honest movie about a current veteran and an illegal immigrant is not easy, but Sean Mullin nailed it. The cast selection was also suburb - you will be wondering "Where did they find the woman who plays Amira?" She is simply terrific. New York, of course, plays itself.

And by the way, I don't agree with some of the other reviews saying that the movie incorrectly portrays Iraqi/Muslim women. I saw Amira as a smart, fiercely independent, strong and caring woman.

...If you can make it to the last 1/2 hour, then it gets good. I'm a Statham fan, so had to see it. It's a little slow, but it was worth watching. Not too many fight scenes, but when they happen, they're good! Kinda 'The Gambler' meets 'The Equalizer' movie. Milo Ventimiglia best known from Heroes as Peter Petrelli does a great job as the bad guy in this film. Wish he had more roles in mainstream movies. Not a huge blockbuster but worth the watch if you can wait until the story gets going. I cant think of much more to write but i have to have ten lines to submit my review so here they are. ( i think short reviews will get better responses. It was great; it was bad, don't see it, etc..) Why do we need such a long review? I myself don't like to read long reviews, just tell me if the movie was good or not!

I have never seen a found footage film I didn't enjoy. This was the exception. Narrowing down specifically what it was, I'd have to say was the lack of suspense. The film spent too much time developing the storyline to try to make it believable, and by the time the action started happening I think I was disinterested. I was so disinterested in fact that I didn't even care what happened to anyone, for better or worse, which is very rare for me. I like most movies, even bad ones. Additionally the main themes of the film didn't seem to fit with each other, it was like they were trying to do too much at once and were all over the place. I did see it in large format which may have ruined it for me. If you're thinking about seeing it, avoid the super- sized screens.

Strange Result

The movie has a great story. But let's get to the point, the rendering is terrible. The musical is unbalanced. The story gets shattered and overpowered by it. Causing it to be shortened and lacking deepness. It eats all the time frames where the story could have gone deeper into moments, background character histories, fusions between them.

I also noticed that the movies is aimed for an audience of 12 yrs old girls, so why make the characters so old? How can a little girl gets connection to them? Especially an elf with the face of a 40 years old wrinkled Jamaican pot head who wants to date a little blond teenage girl by giving her a GHB type of potion. There is something very wrong with this concept.

And the ending, I remember shaking my head and going like : Why the kaleidoscope effects? Where did that acid trip come from? Not a clue. That effect was not present before and it broke completely the consistency of the movie.

Remove that, remove half the signing, get everybody a face lift and you probably could get a decent movie. Unfortunately I doubt Disney will want to invest in making a Director's cut out of that flop. Box office sales were terrible. It's unfortunate, the idea was good. But the result was bad. Better luck with Star Wars...

Much Better Than I Expected

Black Sea is about a group of men who have given everything to their jobs, only to be discarded away. These men then get a submarine to find a U-Boat containing Nazi gold.

Going in to the movie with that description and only having seen one trailer, I had low expectations for this. However, this movie was a lot better that I thought it would be despite the events of the movie being predictable to a certain extent.

The story goes as expected apart from I couple of things which I didn't see coming (which is always nice). The characters were a bit lacking. Apart from a couple, most were under-developed. And my main issue with the most of the characters is that I didn't really care most of them. As for the Scottish accents, it was easy enough to understand, but then again, I live in Scotland. The movie does have a good share of awesome and very entertaining scenes though.

In saying that, I still enjoyed the movie as it has a decent story and conclusion, despite lacking a bit in the character department.

Gorgeous drama

I saw this at the CPH PIX film festival in Copenhagen, and was very impressed. Although much of the story that is shown is speculative, it appears to be highly qualified speculation. Whether it reflects historical reality or not, it worked exceedingly well as an epic cinema drama.

As the title says, "The Beloved Sisters" is about the two sisters who loved Friedrich Schiller. Schiller himself is a kind of supporting character, as seen through the eyes of the sisters. The actresses who play the sisters are very good indeed, esp. the older one (Caroline), and it is expertly illustrated how they actually love each other more than they love Schiller.

Highlights include the scene where the sisters sit by Schiller's sickbed in the dark, and (as I interpret it) he can't tell them apart, and the reconciliation scene towards the end where Schiller stands between the sisters, and then discreetly moves away, allowing them to reconnect. Very powerful stuff.

I enjoyed this 171 minute movie immensely and can't wait to watch it again. Definitely one of the best experiences at the film festival.

Good not Great

Taken 3 is basically what one would expect after the events from Taken 1 and Taken 2. The story is decent. Liam is awesome as always. The movie has great action scenes and honestly I thought the movie was pretty good. Not as good as the first one but right up there with the second. I def recommend people to watch this movie if you have already seen the first 2 so you can get a feel and meaning of the characters. Forrest Whitaker was great for those that enjoy his acting and the movie brought myself at the edge of my seat at times. So, if you want a great action movie with stellar acting, go see Taken 3 and continue the journey of Bryan Mills. Enjoy!

An Alienating, Unexpected Finale.

Rec and Rec 2 were some of the most inspiring, horrific genre pieces to come out of the late 2000s. Europe had revitalized horror and managed to push it back into serious territory done well to contrast with America's emphasized near-parody and unintentionally bad or funny horror films. After letting the series take a slight detour into that awful American- like quality with part 3, Rec 4's details showed promise of returning the series to it's original style, climaxing with a finale that could string them together into one of the best horror trilogies.

Unfortunately, that is not what happened here. To say Rec 4 is a bad film is stretching. I think what we have here is a case of "one step forward, half a step back" from part 3. What's changed is not just the abandonment of the "found footage" style that's become synonymous with some promising independent horror films lately. I don't believe dropping that style is what's changed the quality of this film. The film has taken a turn for the camp, whether intentional or unintentional, but it's still entertaining. It's hard to write a review when you want to stress that it's not a bad film, but it's not what was expected so it's a bit of a letdown. Some of the film is too ridiculous, some of the film is funny(where many people feel it shouldn't be funny), but some of it is genuinely nice.

I do dislike that they've dropped the possession aspect in order to focus on the virus as simply a parasite that makes you evil. Where the second film's twist was a genuine surprise, this film's twist was obvious a good while before it was revealed.

However, this is not a bad film, it's just extremely different. I recommend it to anyone who doesn't mind a little bit of a left-field swing for the finale.

But if you're going to get butt-hurt by the abrupt sub-genre-switch between parts 2 and 4, let part 2 be your ending. For me, it works either way. I would definitely recommend this movie to some people though because for it's goals, it's very accomplished, even if it's inferior to the excellent first 2 films.

I must say I was very excited to see this movie in the international film festival hosted here in Auckland.

Set in corrupt small northern Russian town, that could very much be any other town, or even country, in the world, Leviafan explores the confrontation of a man against the mayor. The last wants to kick him out of his house for his own benefit.

Superb photography, superb acting, spine chilling music, solid plot and dark humor touches make Leviafan a truly rewarding experience. One of the best movies I have seen in some time. Do not let the duration discourage you, hours fly. When you glance at your watch for the first time the movie will be over.

Be ready to pity, hate and love the characters. Laugh, feel anguish and rage and enjoy this emotional roller-coaster.

22 years after "The Unforgiven", a new classic has arrived on screens. Finally, a movie that is worth the price of the (way too high, nowadays) ticket. The movie is a western, without twirls or fripperies. The classic, evergreen, canonical revenge plot, splendidly photographed, directed and interpreted. The dirty, twisted face of Mikkelsen is rock solid. The man is hurt, never broken, and gets his final revenge no matter the personal cost. Hollywood has lost the capability of producing non-bullshit movies, Europe comes helping :) John Wayne, James Stewart, Gary Cooper, Burt Lancaster, Gregory Peck and Clint Eastwood are probably welcoming Mikkelsen in the hall of fame.

Blood and Boobs

I have read some reviews before watching this film and it nearly put me off. I get a lot of people can't stand this kind of movie, but not every movie is meant to target the worldwide audience. Salma Hayek plays her role well and looks unbelievable. There are holes in the plot all over the place and some things just don't make sense at all. If you are after a well constructed storyline then move on and keep looking. However, if you are a red blooded male like myself and can overlook the many flaws in this movie and love action movies, then this is worth a watch. The numerous death scenes are great and Salma spends the movie showing off her fantastic body and thats a win win for all of us. So, in a nutshell, if you like looking at mamacita's like Salma and lots of blood and death then 'give it a go. I don't think this movie was made to be taken seriously.

'71 (2014)

One of three movies contributing to the rise of Jack O'Connell this year, '71 is a film I regret missing in hindsight at the London Film Festival. While its narrative doesn't really connect with me, at the very least it has atmosphere. It's got a great simplicity about it - a soldier plummets into a hellish nightmare and has one night to get out. It's not as well written as it could be with side characters suffering from lack of development, but as far as a gritty and volatile experience goes, '71 shows its got the goods, especially in its memorable and expertly executed explosive sequences. The photography is very stripped down and gives it a tense tunnel vision aesthetic. It takes a very effective Ken Loach approach to the acting feeling as authentic as possible, but it suffers when it half-heartedly tries to shape some character drama around it. O'Connell is good, but merely a vessel for us to explore this landscape, I look forward to what he has for us in Unbroken. While it may be lacking in some areas, namely the character work, '71 is still worth watching as a thriller. Director Yann Demange has a future as bright as his star here.

Best Romance Since Life is Beautiful (1998)

If you want a great romantic film that doesn't have any inappropriate context, that encourages men to be better and women to love them for it, this is the one. The film is based around a woman lost in America, trying to find herself by traveling from town to town. And an old fashioned man who she meets and falls in love with. The story is far from a simple open-shut romance; of course they have their struggles. In the end, they learn to love each other so intimately that any sex film couldn't touch. I'm so glad I had the opportunity to see this in theaters and contribute to their opening weekend income. I don't buy many movies, but I'm going to buy this one when it comes out on DVD. Please go see it in theaters and buy it on DVD to support this type of film.

Follow the lives of Viago (Taika Waititi), Deacon (Jonathan Brugh), and Vladislav (Jemaine Clement) - three flatmates who are just trying to get by and overcome life's obstacles-like being immortal vampires who must feast on human blood. Hundreds of years old, the vampires are finding that beyond sunlight catastrophes, hitting the main artery, and not being able to get a sense of their wardrobe without a reflection-modern society has them struggling with the mundane like paying rent, keeping up with the chore wheel, trying to get into nightclubs, and overcoming flatmate conflicts.

Awesome NZ Comedy

The three lead vampires in this film were absolutely fantastic, especially Jonathon Brugh (His solo dance routine was one of the most awkwardly hilarious things I have ever seen!). I loved all three of the main characters and their interactions with Stu. I was laughing the whole way through this film which is continuously funny.

I actually found some of the scenes to be quite frightening, especially when the vampires are chasing one of their victims through their home! This scene was one of my favourites.

I don't think it needed to be a mockumentary though. Sometimes the shots were purposefully too long which felt unnecessary and just slowed the pace of the film. Some of the jolty, hand-held camera shots could be a bit annoying too. Otherwise, I loved it and definitely recommend it! I hope it claims top spot for its opening weekend in NZ.

The Last Five Years (2014)

The Last 5 Years by Tony award winning composer and lyricist Jason Robert Brown is a musical deconstruction of a love affair and a marriage taking place over a five year period. Jamie Wellerstein is a young, talented up and coming Jewish novelist who falls in love with Cathy Hiatt, a Shiksa Goddess struggling actress. Their story is told almost entirely through songs using an intercutting time line device; all of Cathy's songs begin at the end of their marriage and move backwards in time to the beginning of their love affair while Jamie's songs start at the beginning of their affair and move forward to the end of their marriage. They meet in the center when Jamie proposes.

Better sung than visualized

I became a fan of L5Y when I saw a regional production in the Berkshires. I instantly fell in love with the songs and the concept. Since then, I have also seen the recent off-Broadway production directed by Jason Robert Brown himself and have listened to the original cast album non-stop. When I heard they were making a movie of this, I was skeptical, because in the show, neither Jaimie nor Cathy ever share scenes together save for one wedding scene in the middle. I was further skeptical when I heard that they were going to have them in every scene together.

Well, I saw the film on demand last night and I have to say, first let's speak about the music. The reason I loved the music so much was because it had such small orchestrations and no drums. I was afraid that adding drums, more strings, and more electric guitar would take away the chamber feel of the sound, but on the contrary, it actually enhanced it. Second of all, they chose two great singers who were able to sing most of the score live, and I have to give props to Anna Kendrick, who is probably the best Cathy I have seen and heard. Also, props for not cutting a single musical number, and they didn't have to because the show was an hour and a half to begin with.

Now for everything else. The new dialog between the songs hardly added anything to the film. I'm mainly concerned with Cathy's dialog during the Shmuel Song. Also, in the play, every song Cathy sang took place when she was going backwards, but a few parts of her songs, mainly "When You Come Home..." and the final part of "Climbing Uphill", seemed to take place in chronological order. Also, that whole fantasy sequence in Shiksa Goddess with all of Jaimie's Jewish girlfriends was way too unnecessary, as was that brief dance scene during "Moving Too Fast".

Other than those things, I thought it was very well done.

I had the privilege of seeing this at an advanced screening and I was already looking forward to seeing this film and it exceeded all my expectations. Knowing that this film was directed by Matthew Vaughn(Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class) I had a pretty good idea that this film was going to be really good. If you love fast-paced, stylish, humorous, and all around awesome flicks, then this is a definite must see! The action was amazing and I really loved watching Colin Firth kick some ass! Samuel L. Jackson was very fun to watch as a villain as well. I don't think I've had that much fun watching a film in a really long time. The way the creators put a different spin on the superhero genre in Kick-Ass, was very much how they put a spin on the Spy movie genre in Kingsman: The Secret Service. I can guarantee a film like this won't win any major awards but I can guarantee that you will have an entertaining time with this film. Must see 10/10
